Interview with Alessandro Marrandino

Alessandro Marrandino is the author of Machine Learning with BigQuery ML, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: What is/are your specialist tech area(s)?

Alessandro: Data Analytics and AI

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey. What was your motivation for writing this book?

Alessandro: My dream has always been to write a book and spread what I have learned from my personal experience. The opportunity to combine my daily technical experiences with writing a book was very interesting for me and I had no doubts when it was proposed to me.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Alessandro: I always worked in the data and AI market. So, we can say that my researching activity was mostly based on my 10 years experience in data analytics and data management. For this book, I deepened the main machine learning concepts to make them as usable as possible. The research on BigQuery ML was extremely interesting and gave me the opportunity to learn more about this fantastic technology.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Alessandro: The main challenge that I faced was the time constraint. Writing this book occupied mostly my spare time for several months.

Q: What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?

Alessandro: I think that BigQuery ML will be always more important for data and business analysts that want to accelerate the ML development reusing existing SQL skills.

Q: Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?

Alessandro If I’m not wrong, this is the first book entirely dedicated to BigQuery ML. The hands-on approach is fundamental to provide the right skills in an effective and fast way. From the beginning, the reader will be able to apply the learned concepts on actual and interesting use-cases.

Q. What are the key takeaways you want readers to come away from the book with?

Alessandro First, machine learning isn’t necessarily complicated. Second, the Cloud bring into our hands great technologies with low investments. The last one: SQL is the most well known language and using it for Machine Learning is fantastic.

Q. What are your favorite tech journals? How do you keep yourself up to date on tech?

Alessandro: I usually reads TechCrunch and CloudWars.
