Interview with Author Dr. Kevin Jellow

Dr. Kevin Jellow is the author of The Ins and Outs of Azure VMware Solution; we got the chance to sit down and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: What are your specialist tech areas?

Dr. Kevin: Microsoft Azure, networking, cyber security.

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey. What was your motivation for writing this book?

Dr. Kevin: I was approached by a marketing manager from Packt about writing this book. Since this is my area of focus at Microsoft, I decided to take on the project.
I have always planned on writing a book, but the focus was on my personal journey, not a tech book.
I have gained a fantastic experience writing my first book, and I am sure this won’t be the last one.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Dr. Kevin: The research for me was minimal since this is the technology I am currently focused on at Microsoft.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Dr. Kevin: I was faced with a lot of challenges during the writing of this book. Mainly, time was a big challenge since I work full-time and have family and other obligations to prioritize.

I broke down my workdays into different segments to facilitate writing this book. With that said, I spent a lot of sleepless nights working on getting this book out to the readers.

Q: What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?

Dr. Kevin: Azure VMware Solution is the fastest way for a customer to migrate their on-premises VMware workload to Azure. With this solution, customers do not need to modernize their workload for compatibility with the native Azure environment.
With many customers still running VMware workloads on-premises, this solution will continue to be available to customers for a very long while, adding features and functionalities to make migration even more effortless.

Q: Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?

Dr. Kevin: Readers should choose this book since it is written by a subject matter expert focusing on Azure VMware Solution.

Q: What are the key takeaways you want readers to come away with from the book?

Dr. Kevin: I would like for my readers to understand the use case for this technology, as well as the planning, deployment, and management of the Azure VMware Solution.

Q. What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Dr. Kevin: For individuals entering the tech industry, I advise them to focus on the areas that matter to customers most so they can have a long and progressive career.
I advise individuals to focus on areas they enjoy working in vs. just the latest tech. An example of this is focusing on coding instead of networking if you enjoy coding. And if you enjoy networking focus on networking.

Q. What are your favorite tech journals? How do you keep yourself up to date on tech?

Dr. Kevin: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/azure/ct-p/Azure. I focus on the areas of technology that I am currently working on. In this case, I pay close attention to the updates and new releases in the Azure VMware Solution. I also concentrate on and keep up with Microsoft Azure networking.

Q. Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?

Dr. Kevin: azure.microsoft.com, https://virtualworkloads.com/author/trevordavis/, https://github.com/dmauser

Q. How would you describe your author’s journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?

Dr. Kevin: My author experience with Packt has been very good. The team at Packt is very experienced and professional, and they are great at helping a young author such as myself.
I will definitely recommend Packt to any author.

Q. How did you organize, plan, and prioritize your work and write the book?

Dr. Kevin: I organized my days by dividing my time into different segments focused on different areas of my life. During the day, I focused on work activities, and during the night, I focused on writing the book with adequate rest in between.

Q. What is that one writing tip that you found most crucial and would like to share with aspiring authors?

Dr. Kevin: Scheduling. You have to dedicate a schedule to writing the content of your book. If this is done, you will be able to meet deadlines, creating a good writing experience.

Q. Would you like to share your social handles? If so, please share.
