Interview with Jeffrey Ng on his new book “Hands-On Artificial Intelligence for Banking”

Jeffrey Ng is the author of the book Hands-On Artificial Intelligence for Banking, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

Jeffrey: 6 months for the first cut, 18 months for copy editing.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Jeffrey: Desktop research on use cases and data source research. As I work in a bank, I need to make sure no insider information is leaked. I realize that all of the use cases appear in the public domain. Another research I spent lots of time is to find out meaningful data to use. For topics like AI, it is necessary to find the right dateset to illustrate the meaningful use case.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Jeffrey: My second child was born 2nd month I was writing the book; while in the copy editing process, I joined a start-up organization which had a hectic work to kick-start the business. I overcome the first challenge by having a supportive night shift nanny and the second challenge by leveraging the co-author’s help.

Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Jeffrey: Tech people are respectable people, you do the hard work, why don’t you learn the business rationale to become the people that give you funding?

Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?

Jeffrey: I work in the field, while also keep exploring new topics as my side hobbies. This book is a hobby turned project.

Q. Do you have a blog that readers can follow?

Jeffrey: python-for-banking.com I will share more the back-story of the book.

Q. Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?

Jeffrey: The topic (AI applications in Banking) has a scattered body of knowledge as the industry participants are still muddling through their own transformation journey. Unfortunately there is not enough place to allow the discussion takes place.
