John Knight is the author of The DevOps Career Handbook. We got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.
Q: What are your specialist tech area(s)?
John: Devops, Cloud, Gaming
Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey. What was your motivation for writing this book?
John: I wanted to write a book on DevOps focusing on a non-technical area. I am passionate about career development so I thought I could do both.
Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?
John: It’s tough to keep writing when you are stuck, don’t have inspiration, or are generally tired. Sometimes it’s hard to reach a certain page count. Best best is to take a break and recharge, then try again.
Q. What’s your take on the technologies discussed in the book? Where do you see these technologies heading in the future?
John: I see a lot of automation coming in to the process, and potentially being disruptive. That is why practicing continuous learning is very important.
Q: Why should readers choose this book over others already on the market? How would you differentiate your book from its competition?
John: It has over 30 years of combined experience and is very targeted.
Q. What are the key takeaways you want readers to come away from the book with?
John: How to improve your career in some significant way.
Q. What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?
John: Always keep learning. Technology doesn’t stop and neither should you.
Q. Do you have a blog that readers can follow?
John: I did but I no longer update it. Best bet is to follow me on LinkedIn.
Q. Can you share any blogs, websites, and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?
John: Anything written by Gene Kim is a good place to start.
Q. How would you describe your author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?
John: My experience with Packt was very positive and very low stress. I would definitely recommend it especially for new authors.
Q. What are your favorite tech journals? How do you keep yourself up to date on tech?
John: I have summary emails delivered to my mailbox daily. I digest those once or twice a day.
Q. How did you organize, plan, and prioritize your work and write the book?
John: Write table of contents, refine until satisfied then work in blocks.
Q. What is the one writing tip that you found most crucial and would like to share with aspiring authors?
John: Have someone else read over your work and give you feedback constantly.
