Lau Thiam Kok is the author of Hands-on Nuxt.js Web Development, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.
Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey.
Lau: I’ve been an instructional author at LinkedIn Learning and Pluralsight for several years, and print media seemed like the next leap for my career. Someone from Packt got in touch with an offer to write a beginner level programming book and I jumped at the chance.
Q: How long did it take you to write the book?
Lau: About 1 and 6 months…
Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?
Lau: Online research, using Nuxt.js official documentation and Nuxt.js GitHub community. It took one- or two-week research for each chapter.
Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?
Lau: The main challenge was time. It was scheduled to complete the book in 9 months. But in reality, at least one month was needed for writing a chapter. I only realized that when I started writing the book. There are 18 chapters in total in the book. But I managed to complete the book in the end
Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?
Lau: Learn from various resources, such as online courses (video or text-based) and books (digital or print). Personally I find text-based resources are better for learning a new tech. Read and use the official documentations of whichever tech you are learning – even though the official documentation can be badly written sometimes. Write your own documentation whether or not the official documentation is badly written. Join the appropriate tech community and ask questions when you are stuck. Search for answers from the community too.
Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?
Lau: Subscribing to Nuxt.js newsletter mailing list can keep me up-to-date on Nuxt.js. Following Nuxt.js on Twitter as they are quite active on Twitter.
Q. Do you have a blog that readers can follow?
Lau: Yes, I have a blog on Codementor at https://www.codementor.io/@lautiamkok. But all my blog posts will eventually move to my own site at https://lauthiamkok.net/origins
Q. Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning?
Lau: The blog from the Nuxt.js team is a good one to follow up at https://nuxtjs.org/blog. The official guide from Nuxt.js is a good site too at https://nuxtjs.org/guide. Also, the reader can learn Nuxt.js from Vue School at https://vueschool.io/courses/nuxtjs-fundamentals.
Q. How would you describe your author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?
Lau: It’s a wonderful journey as an author with Packt. The Packt team was very patient and supportive throughout the journey writing the book. And yes, I will definitely recommend Packt to other aspiring authors.
