Interview with Piotr Tylenda

Piotr Tylenda is the author of Hands-On Kubernetes on Windows, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey…

Piotr: Packt actually approached me asking if I would like to write a book on topic of Kubernetes on Windows. At this point, I had some open-source projects on GitHub which were aiming at automating the deployment of hybrid Windows/Linux Kubernetes clusters and they were used by a group of engineers who were interested in testing Windows nodes features back in the days when the support was still in beta phase.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

Piotr: In total, it was almost exactly one year but to be honest, the last 4 months were the most intense.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Piotr: I was following the development of Windows nodes support in Kubernetes since version 1.8 and gaining all the experience while working on experimental on-premises cluster deployments. So most of my knowledge comes from my work experience but of course I had to take a few weeks of good deep-dive into the official documentation for Kubernetes, Windows Containers and Azure Kubernetes Service before starting even planning the book.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Piotr: The greatest challenge is to stay consistent while writing the book. I have noticed that it is better to actually focus on writing 2 hours per day, but daily, instead of trying to push everything as your weekend task. Consistency is the key. And of course I have faced quite many challenges when trying to set up proper code/deployment examples for the book – as always, with cutting-edge technologies, there are various challenges which you have to solve yourself, documentation will not be helpful in such cases. You have to take a good look into the source code of Kubernetes!

Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Piotr: Always try using the new knowledge in practice, as soon as possible. This is the key to understanding the technology and remembering as much details as possible.

Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?

Piotr: Listening to podcasts, watching tech conference videos (even youtube) and of course digging deep through release notes and documentation of software that I am interested in. And eventually books, mainly in form of e-books.

How would you describe you author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?

Piotr: The overall experience is very satisfying. The team that you work with is always ready to help!
