Interview with Steve Tingiris

Steve Tingiris is the author of Exploring GPT-3, we got the chance to sit down with him and find out more about his experience of writing with Packt.

Q: How did you become an author for Packt? Tell us about your journey?

Steve: Sunith Shetty, from Packt, contacted me to ask if I would be interested in writing a book about GPT-3. I got involved with GPT-3 because I was creating Gaby: Dabble Lab’s virtual assistant who would use AI to create technical videos and tutorials. These videos would actually have the ability to keep up with current technologies. Writing a book that would teach others about GPT-3 became a natural extension of my research and work.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

Steve: Six months.

Q: What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning the book?

Steve: I was part of the open AI beta from August/September 2020 and Sunith contacted me in November-December 2020, so I had been dabbling with GPT-3 for at least 4 months already.

Q: Did you face any challenges during the writing process? How did you overcome them?

Steve: The first challenge was managing my time so that I could continue to dabble with GPT-3 and other new technologies, write the book and work. Another challenge was one that is very common when working with emerging technologies. Since GPT-3 is still in beta, it is constantly changing. So keeping up with the changes and incorporating them in the book was difficult at times. Finally, since GPT-3 is so new, there is not a lot of information or research on it available.

Q: What advice would you give to readers learning tech? Do you have any top tips?

Steve: When it comes to technology, the only constant is change and change happens faster than we can keep up with. Staying current and aware of emerging technologies is critical even if becoming an expert in all of them is impossible. My advice? Dabble.

Q. How do you keep up-to-date on your tech?

Steve: Basically, I block out time in my schedule to simply explore and work with new and emerging technologies. I also set yearly goals to learn and try new things like learning new programming languages, building smart contracts, etc.

Q. Do you have a blog that readers can follow?

Steve :You can subscribe to Dabble Lab’s YouTube channel to stay current on new technologies as we dabble with the latest and greatest. https://www.youtube.com/dabblelab

Q. Can you share any blogs, websites and forums to help readers gain a holistic view of the tech they are learning??

Steve: I think the best resource when it comes to GPT-3 is OpenAI API’s Community Forum.

Q. How would you describe you author journey with Packt? Would you recommend Packt to aspiring authors?

Steve: This is a bit difficult since it is my first time writing a book. Like with everything, there has been a learning curve, but I am definitely thankful for the experience. I am also excited to see how book writing processes evolve with the introduction of new technologies in the future.
